The Huron River is home to more than 30 native mussel species, including a dozen listed as threatened or endangered by the state. The planned removal of the Peninsular Paper Dam, which has stood since 1867 and was decommissioned in the 1970s, raised alarms among conservationists and state officials about the risk to these slow-moving, long-lived creatures.
Why Mussels Needed Protection
