Elliotte Friedman reports that talks are close on a deal carrying a $13 million average annual value. DeBrincat has said he wants to stay in Detroit.
Negotiations are close, but Detroit has not announced a signed contract. Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reported that the Red Wings are nearing a seven-year extension with Alex DeBrincat, a Farmington Hills native. The reported $91 million deal would keep the winger under contract through the 2033-34 season.
The extension would begin in 2027-28, after DeBrincat's current contract expires. That four-year deal is worth $31.5 million and carries a $7.875 million cap hit. He is in its final season and could otherwise become an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2027. The reported extension would raise his average annual value to $13 million.
The proposed payment schedule is front-loaded. DeBrincat would receive $15 million in the first season. The next five seasons would pay $12.93 million each, followed by $11.35 million in the final season.
The terms also include a full no-trade clause for the first four years. Trade protection would then use a 10-team list. A later list would cover 18 teams, followed by a 13-team list.
DeBrincat is coming off his most productive season in Detroit. He scored 41 goals and added 44 assists in 82 games in 2025-26, becoming the fourth Red Wings player to reach 40 goals in the salary-cap era. Through Detroit's first six games of 2026-27, he had four goals and eight points. On Tuesday, he scored twice and added an assist in an overtime loss to the New Jersey Devils.
DeBrincat has said he wants to remain in Detroit. The Red Wings acquired him from the Ottawa Senators in July 2023, sending Dominik Kubalík and Donovan Sebrango to Ottawa. The deal also included a 2024 first-round pick and a 2024 fourth-round pick.
Chicago selected DeBrincat in the second round of the 2016 draft. He has played 702 NHL games, first with the Blackhawks and then the Senators. Detroit is his third NHL club. Since joining the Red Wings, he has appeared in 252 games, scoring 111 goals and recording 163 points. Across his career, he has 298 goals and 603 points.
Detroit is 1-3-2 to open the 2026-27 season. Steve Yzerman left the general manager position in July 2026 and moved into a senior adviser role. Shawn Horcoff is serving as interim general manager.
The NHL described Detroit's early-season leadership approach as a group effort involving Ben Chiarot and DeBrincat. Justin Faulk and Keegan Kolesar were also named. Moritz Seider was included in the league's coverage of Detroit's leadership group.
Horcoff is handling negotiations with restricted free agent Simon Edvinsson. He is also dealing with former captain Dylan Larkin's trade request. The reported DeBrincat extension would keep one of Detroit's leading scorers under contract beyond the current season. TheScore detailed the reported terms.
