Monmouth County Parks System is expanding its fall youth hiking programs, offering new sessions for toddlers, children, and teens at multiple park locations. Registration is open, but spots are limited and filled on a first-come, first-served basis
The Monmouth County Parks System in New Jersey has introduced a series of new hiking programs for children and teens this fall, expanding its outdoor offerings for local families. The initiative includes additional sessions for toddlers, as well as new night hikes designed for older children, with registration now available for all programs.
Families can choose from a variety of guided hikes, each tailored to different age groups and interests. All activities are held at county parks across Monmouth County, with locations and dates varying by program. Registration is required, and spaces are limited for each session.
Programs for Toddlers and Young Children
The "Nature Tots" series, designed for children ages 2 to 5 accompanied by an adult, continues this fall with three themed sessions: River Otter, Deer, and Sparrow. Each series meets weekly at different park locations, offering young children the chance to explore nature, participate in crafts, and enjoy short hikes suited to their stamina. The cost for a three-session series is $45 per parent/child pair, with an $18 fee for each additional sibling. Children under two may attend at no charge if carried, as strollers are not suitable for the trails.
For families seeking a single-session experience, the new "Hiking Adventures" program is also available for ages 2 to 5 with an adult. These hikes are scheduled at Thompson Park and Clayton Park, with a fee of $18 per parent/child pair and $7 for each additional sibling.
Night Hikes and After-School Options for Older Kids
Older children can participate in the "Young Explorers at Night" series, open to ages 6 to 9. This three-session program introduces kids to nighttime hiking, trail etiquette, and local wildlife, with sessions held at Turkey Swamp Park, Shark River Park, and Tatum Park. The cost is $45 per child, with a $30 fee for additional siblings. Participants are asked to bring a flashlight, water, and a snack.
Teens ages 10 to 14 can join the "Lights Out Hike," a one-session event at Thompson Park where participants hike by the light of the full moon, without flashlights. This program costs $18 per person and is designed for those interested in experiencing the outdoors after dark.
For children ages 6 to 8, the "After School Hikes" program offers a single-session hike at Holmdel Park, focusing on trail skills, wildlife observation, and socializing with peers. The fee is $15 per child.
Registration and Additional Information
All programs require advance registration through the Monmouth County Parks System website. Spots are filled on a first-come, first-served basis, and families are encouraged to join the waitlist if a session is full. If enough interest is shown, additional hikes may be added to the schedule.
Each program is listed under the "Outdoor Adventure" section of the Parks System's registration portal. Families should review specific meeting locations and times for each session, as they vary by date and park. Participants are advised to dress appropriately for outdoor activity and bring necessary supplies as indicated for each program.
The Monmouth County Parks System regularly updates its seasonal offerings to encourage outdoor activity and environmental education for local youth. These fall hikes are part of ongoing efforts to connect children and families with the county's natural resources and park facilities.
