A $47 million renovation is underway at Elizabeth Taylor's longtime Bel Air estate, adding new amenities and expanded living space while preserving much of the original interior. The project aims to honor the late actress's legacy and update the property for modern use.

Elizabeth Taylor's former estate in the Bel Air neighborhood of Los Angeles is in the midst of a major $47 million renovation, according to reporting by The New York Post. The property, where Taylor lived for nearly 30 years until her death in 2011, was purchased in 2021 by builder Ardie Tavangarian for $15 million. The project is designed to both preserve the home's historic character and introduce significant new features.

The original 7,000-square-foot residence, which includes five bedrooms, will retain much of its interior as it appeared during Taylor's time. However, the renovation will add a 12,000-square-foot expansion, bringing new amenities and additional living space to the 1.3-acre property.

Major Additions and Upgrades

The buildout includes three new bedrooms, a spa, and a screening room, according to the Post. One of the most notable features will be a 4,500-square-foot retractable roof, designed to enhance the home's entertainment and relaxation spaces. The project aims to blend the estate's classic Hollywood legacy with modern luxury and functionality.

Builder Ardie Tavangarian told the Post that he is approaching the renovation as if Elizabeth Taylor herself were the client, emphasizing a commitment to honoring her legacy while updating the property for contemporary living. The goal is to create a "phase 2" that continues the spirit of the original home while enhancing its beauty and utility.

Preserving a Hollywood Landmark

The estate's renovation comes at a time when many historic homes in Los Angeles face demolition or drastic alteration. By maintaining much of the original interior and architectural details, the project seeks to preserve a piece of Hollywood history while making the property suitable for future generations.

The $47 million investment reflects both the scale of the planned upgrades and the value placed on the estate's cultural significance. The expanded home will offer a blend of historic charm and modern amenities, making it one of the most notable residential projects currently underway in Bel Air.

Elizabeth Taylor's Bel Air home is recognized not only for its famous former resident but also for its role in the broader story of Los Angeles' architectural and entertainment heritage. The renovation is expected to set a precedent for how iconic properties can be updated without erasing their past.
