The Farmington Hills Fire Department will provide free car seat inspections for families on Sunday, September 12. Appointments are required and must be confirmed by September 10 to secure a spot at Fire Station #3.

Families in Farmington Hills can have their child car seats checked for safety and proper installation during a free inspection event scheduled for Sunday, September 12. The Farmington Hills Fire Department will host the inspections at Fire Station #3, located at 29260 Grand River Ave., from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Appointments are required and must be confirmed by Friday, September 10.

Certified child car seat technicians from the Farmington Hills Fire Department will review each car seat for correct installation and check for any manufacturer recalls. Parents and caregivers will also receive hands-on guidance to ensure they understand how to install and use their car seats safely in their own vehicles. Each inspection is expected to take about 45 minutes, and the service is open to the public with no residency restrictions.

How to Register

To participate, families must schedule an appointment by emailing FDEvents@fhgov.com before the September 10 deadline. Due to limited availability, walk-ins will not be accepted. The event is designed to help parents and caregivers navigate the often confusing process of car seat installation, which can vary depending on the vehicle and seat model.

Why Proper Installation Matters

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, nearly half of all child car seats in the United States are installed or used incorrectly. Proper installation can reduce the risk of fatal injury by about 70% for infants and 50% for toddlers in the event of a crash. Ensuring that children are in the right seat for their age, height, and weight-and that the seat is secured correctly every time-is critical for their safety.

Event Details and Safety Focus

During the inspection, technicians will check for accurate installation, review the seat for possible recalls, and provide instruction on safe use. The Farmington Hills Fire Department emphasizes that keeping children safe during travel is a top priority, and the event is part of ongoing efforts to support community safety. There is no cost to participate, and families from any community are welcome.

Car seat safety checks are a regular part of the Farmington Hills Fire Department's public safety outreach. The department encourages all parents and caregivers, especially those with new car seats or vehicles, to take advantage of this opportunity to ensure their children are protected on the road.
