Knitting, golf and more in March for Farmington area adults 50-plus

The City of Farmington Hills offers dozens of programs for area adults age 50 and better at the Center for Active Adults, located in the Costick Center, 28600 W. 11 Mile Rd. The Center is open Monday – Friday from 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Lunch is served daily, $2.75 donation for ages 60 and better, $5 for under 60.

iPad Basics – Part 2

Thursdays, March 1 – 29, 11 a.m. – 12 p.m. This class is designed for those with an Apple iPad and is a continuation of Part 1. Bring your fully charged iPad with you to class. Fee is $25/residents, $30/non-residents.

Shredding for Safety

Tuesday, March 6, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. Protect your identity, declutter your home, and recycle. Bring in up to four paper grocery bags of documents to be securely shredded. Stay in your car, papers will be unloaded for you. No junk mail or trash! For Farmington and Farmington Hills residents ages 50+ ONLY. No fee.

Powerful Tools for Caregivers

Tuesdays, March 6 – April 10, 10 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. This educational program will help caregivers learn how to take care of themselves, manage emotions, reduce guilt, and handle anger and depression. Sponsored by the Area Agency on Aging 1-B. Suggested donation $25. Register in Conway Hall or call 248-473- 1830.

Learn How to Organize Your Computer

Fridays, March 9 and 16, 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. Learn to create folders and organize your digital photos, emails, and information in an orderly system. Discover how to download and copy files from the Internet, plus save files and projects to your computer, CDs, and flash drives. Bring your fully charged laptop (optional). Fee is $40 residents/$42 non-residents.

Brain Storm – Brain Neurobics

Monday, March 12, 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. Shake up your brain with fun activities that stimulate and invigorate your thinking with this new program designed by the Wayne State University Institute of Gerontology. Call 248-473-1830 to register.

St. Paddy’s Day Party

Friday, March 16, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. Enjoy a traditional lunch of corned beef hash and cabbage or fish. Try your luck at the raffle and trivia games, win a door prize, and dance a jig to the music of the Mike Wolverton Band. You’ll be entertained by students from the O’Hare School of Irish Dance before lunch. Don’t forget to wear green! Fee is $8 by March 15, $10 after. Intermediate Knitting Classes

Thursdays, March 22 – April 12, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. Take your skills to the next level. Learn to use a loom to create a hat. Fee is $55 residents/$60 non-residents. $15 materials fee payable first day of class.


Friday, March 23, 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. Head to Conway Hall located inside the Costick Center for karaoke fun! Sing your favorite classics from the past or today’s hits. Light refreshments. Fee is $2.

Diabetes Self-Management

Mondays, March 26 – April 30, 9:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. This six-week session is designed to enhance patient confidence in managing your diabetes and working with health care providers. Sign up in Conway Hall.

Dine and Discover – History of the Governor Warner Mansion

Tuesday, March 27, 10 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. Enjoy a special brunch while you learn about the 150-year- old Governor Warner Mansion in downtown Farmington’s historic district. This prominent landmark and historical museum is a great venue for old-fashioned family fun. Advance tickets only, $8 at the Costick Center.

Detroit Tiger Luncheon

Thursday, March 29, 12 p.m. – 5 p.m. Enjoy a baseball-themed lunch, trivia, and good laughs followed by the Detroit Tigers game on TV. Wear your orange and blue! Lunch at 12 p.m. in Conway Hall. Suggested donation $5 or $2.75 for 60 and over

2018 Fifty and Better Golf Leagues

Registration for Women’s, Men’s, and Couples’ Leagues continues through mid-April. General meetings will be held at the Costick Center for Women’s League on Monday, April 16 at 10 a.m.; Couples’ League on Wednesday, April 18 at 11 a.m.; and Men’s League on Friday, April 20 at 10 a.m. Play the Farmington Hills Golf Club for all levels of golfers. Dance and fitness classes are available and most of them offer drop-in rates. Several support groups are also available including Caregivers, Grief and Loss, First Step Stroke, and Vision Support. Many clubs meet regularly including Computer Forum, the Painters Group, Book Discussion and the Red Hat Society. Advance registration is required for all programs.
