A Harrison High School alum has released a new guide for anyone navigating through Detroit’s thriving bar scene.
Mike Kline set out in early 2017 to visit, photograph, and chronicle every bar in the D. The result is Watering Holes: Your Guide to Detroit’s Bars, Pubs, and Taverns, available via wateringholesbook.com.
“I love Detroit,” said the 1987 grad, who now lives in Canton. “Seeing it rise from the ashes over the past couple of years has been amazing to watch. This book is my way of raising a glass, to toast this awesome city.”
Kline’s photo-laden book profiles more than 150 watering holes organized by neighborhood. It includes addresses, maps, websites, phone numbers, and everything you need to know about the food and drinks offered at each establishment.
The guide has a “Been There” box to tick at the top of each page, making it easy to keep track of which bars you’ve visited. Many locals have taken up the challenge of visiting every bar in the book, turning this humble guide into a holy grail of sorts.
“The book has inspired my friends and me to tour the city and get signatures from the establishments,” said Detroit resident Daniel T. “The layout and content makes for a great guide and an entertaining night out with friends and owners. Kudos for a wonderful book and fun-filled destinations ahead. We only have 137 more to go!”
Kline will sign guides on November 15, 4 p.m.-9 p.m. at Batch Brewing Company, 1400 Porter St., Detroit.
