The City of Farmington Hills offers dozens of programs for area adults age 50 and better at the Center for Active Adults, located in the Costick Center on 11 Mile Road between Middlebelt and Inkster. The Center is open Monday-Friday from 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Lunch is served daily, $2.75 donation for ages 60 and better, $5 for under 60.

New Fitness Class – FIT 5000
Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9:45 – 10:45 a.m. Instructor: Deborah Koss. Low impact workouts are based on popular dance and fitness steps to achieve 5,000 steps per class. Burn fat and calories, and improve muscle strength all while having fun listening to a variety of new and classic music. Alternative steps are demonstrated so everyone can choose their own levels of desired intensity. Bring a mat, hand weights, water, and your Fitbit, Pedometer, Apple Watch, etc. (not mandatory). Drop in and try it! Fee is $4 residents/$5 non-residents. Classes are held in the Costick Center gym.

Tuesday, Feb. 5, 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. The Police Department will host a presentation about how tax scammers use the phone, email, and regular mail to deceive citizens into divulging personal information. Protect yourself and your identity. No fee.
Microsoft Word Made Easy
Friday, Feb. 8, 9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. A workshop designed for recent learners covering saving files, sorting lists, creating tables, pictures, page setup, and more. The book fee is $25 due at the first class. One-hour break for lunch. Fee is $55 residents/$60 non-residents.
Valentine Celebration

Tuesday, Feb. 19, 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. Learn about how to choose a housing option that fits your needs and budget, plus learn skills to deal with large families and multiple opinions. A complimentary lunch will be provided in Conway Hall after the presentation. No fee.
Learn to Organize Your Computer Files
Friday, Feb. 22, 9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Create an orderly system for your files, digital photos, email, and other info scattered on your computer, plus learn how to transfer photos from your cell phone to your computer. Karaoke
Friday, Feb. 22, 1 – 3 p.m. Head to Conway Hall for karaoke with Zack Entertainment. Sing your favorite classics from the past or today’s newest hits. Light refreshments. Fee is $2.
Beginning Knitting Classes
Mondays, Feb. 25 – March 25 (no class March 4), 1 – 3 p.m. Learn the basics of casting on, knitting, and purling, then ribbing seed stitch and binding off so you can knit a scarf of your own. Fee is $55 residents/$60 non-residents. $15 materials fee payable to the instructor on the first day of class.
Dine and Discover – Blood and Beer
Tuesday, Feb. 26, 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. Enjoy a delicious treat while historian Scott Burstein details the Prohibition Era in Detroit, when the Motor City was the epicenter of the bootlegging trade and the Purple Gang was a household name. Learn how local gangs smuggled and distributed liquor across the nation. Advance tickets only, $10 at the Costick Center.
Dance and fitness classes are available and most of them offer drop-in rates. Several support groups are also available including Caregivers, Grief and Loss, First Step Stroke, and Vision Support. Many clubs meet regularly including Computer Forum, the Painters Group, Book Discussion and the Red Hat Society. All programs are sponsored by the Senior Adult Division of the City of Farmington Hills.
