The 2019 Stars in the Park outdoor concert season closes on August 15, with a jazz group headed by Farmington Hills firefighter Stan Barnes.
The 7 p.m. Stan Barnes & Friends concert at the amphitheater in Heritage Park features a star-studded cast, full band and vocals for a mixture of jazz, R&B, funk, and Motown. This concert has for the past decade sold out the Ford Performing Arts Center in Dearborn.
A saxophonist, Barnes has worked for more than 20 years as a firefighter and fire inspector. Dames Brown, a high-powered group of female vocalists that includes Lisa LaRae Starr, Teresa Marbury, and Athena Johnson, will join him on stage.
The band includes Terry Washington on bass, Jeff Canady on drums, Karlton Smith on lead guitar, Billy Cowart on percussion, and Kevin Tubbs and Ollie Copper on keys. Dancing, skits, and several well-known cover songs are all part of the evening.
“What I really love about Stan is that he creates an environment where you can relax,” Brenda Barnes, his wife and manager, said in a press release. “There is a feeling of ‘No Worries. No Problem.’ Whatever you’re going through, he’s going to take care of you and make you forget yourself so that you can just enjoy the music.”
In case of inclement weather, this concert will be held at the Costick Center, 28600 W. 11 Mile Rd. Concert information will be available after 4 p.m. at 248-473-1848.
Mercedes-Benz Financial Services, the exclusive sponsor of the summer concerts, will offer this year’s final raffle drawing for concert goers to win the use of a Mercedes-Benz vehicle for one week. Attendees (21 years or older with a valid U.S. driver’s license) may enter by visiting the vehicle display during the concert.
