Farmington and Walled Lake school officials issued a “stranger danger” reminder Friday, after a man in a white van was seen watching children in a Farmington Hills neighborhood.

According to WDIV-TV, the incident occurred on a street east of Haggerty Road, between 13 Mile and 14 Mile Roads. The neighborhood is in Walled Lake Consolidated School District.

In a statement released Friday evening, Superintendent George Heitsch said Farmington Hills Police Department has notified the district of stepped up patrols in the area.

“We share this information with you, not to raise anxiety, but as an opportunity to remind our families of the importance of being observant,” Heitsch wrote. “With spring weather approaching, our children will be spending more time outdoors, which is encouraged. Having said this, we must remind our children to report any suspicious behavior promptly to a trusted adult. As a family, please discuss how to respond to unknown adults and encourage children that when they feel uncomfortable fleeing and finding a known, safe adult is the right decision.”
