Smart phone app alerts Farmington residents to house fire

A Farmington homeowner’s decision to install a home alarm system with a smart phone connection really paid off Sunday.

Farmington Public Safety Director Frank Demers said the Arundel Street residents were enjoying dinner in Novi when the app signaled a carbon monoxide and fire alarm. They immediately headed home and spotted smoke as they pulled into the driveway.

Firefighters arrived at around 8:30 p.m. and remained at the scene for about three hours. Demers said the smart phone alert made a difference in the amount of damage to the structure.

“Since they were quick to get home, we were able to get there quickly,” he said. “It’s definitely a salvageable property.”

Oakland County investigators will help determine the cause of the fire, which Demers said was accidental and possibly the result of an electrical problem.
