Farmington Schools honors 25 ‘Turn Around’ students

Last month, Farmington Public Schools honored 25 students who have turned their lives around, facing everything from social difficulties to academic and discipline issues.

The 2018 Turn Around Awards ceremony, held at Glen Oaks Country Club in Farmington Hills, included music provided by the Warner Middle School Jazz band, under the direction of Katie Fauls. Speakers included Superintendent George Heitsch, Farmington Director of Public Safety Frank Demers, Farmington Hills Chief of Police Charles Nebus, and K.C. Lopata, Site-Coordinator of the Eastern Michigan University Bright Futures Program.

Among the honorees were Warner Middle School 7th grader Rayshon Mathews and Farmington High senior Wade Dillard. Warner assistant principal, Kelly Kaminski, said he benefitted in sixth grade from “restorative practice and staff and parent support.”

“Rayshon learned how to manage conflict and turn himself into a seventh grade instrumental leader,” Kaminski said.

Stacey Rosol, Farmington High School Guidance Counselor, said Dillard struggled during his freshman and sophomore years with his grades and discipline issues.

“Wade has been willing to work hard to correct his mistakes. His senior year is proving to be his best year yet,” she said.
