Houhanisin, a 13-year department veteran, was promoted to sergeant in 2009 and commander in 2014. He is currently assigned as a patrol division commander. He holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Western Michigan University and is a graduate of the Kalamazoo Valley Community College Police Academy.

The Eastern Michigan University Staff and Command school’s intensive program, geared toward police management, includes 350 hours of classroom instruction over 10 months.

“The public safety department is committed to training its personnel to prepare them for leadership positions within the department,” said FPS Director Frank Demers. “I’m proud of all the hard work and dedication that Commander Houhanisin gave to successfully complete this very challenging executive management program. This training will only serve to strengthen his already outstanding leadership abilities.”
