Farmington nonprofit event raises funds to help breast cancer survivors

A Farmington nonprofit will celebrate its first year of helping breast cancer survivors with a special event at the Detroit Yacht Club.

“Because She’s A Lady” is dedicated to providing prostheses and mastectomy bras to survivors who are uninsured or cannot otherwise afford them. The organization also provides properly fitted sports bras to teen girls involved in organized sports.

Founders Mariam Searcy and Kelly Freeman, both certified fitters and owners of the All About Women’s Health Boutique of Farmington, will host the “Harvest for Health “ luncheon on Sunday, October 7, 2 p.m.-6 p.m.

A breast prosthesis costs about $400; a mastectomy bra, about $65. The cost of a quality sports bra is about $75.

“Our celebration will be an enjoyable event held at a great venue,” Freeman said. “We will have the beautiful Yacht Club and Belle Isle as the backdrop for our celebration, along with a wonderful luncheon and live entertainment.”

“The purpose of the occasion is to mark the beginning of our second year of service and to raise funds to enable the continuation of our mission,” Searcy added.
