The Farmington Hills Sam’s Club on Northwestern Highway will close for good on January 26.
While parent company Walmart has not issued an official list, the Hills closure was confirmed in a letter to the state’s Workforce Development Agency and Farmington Hills Mayor Ken Massey. According to the letter, 158 employees at the warehouse club in North Orchard Plaza will lose their jobs, with hourly employees working until mid-March and management until mid-April.
Farmington Voice Facebook followers found the store closed on Thursday, but employees said it would re-open Friday. Some were disappointed by the closure. Karen Duffey said she prefers Sam’s to Costco. Christine Marzan felt the store might have done better if it had a gasoline station, as the Novi and Southfield locations do.
Others urged neighbors to support Costco, because of Walmart’s business practices.
“Join Costco and stop supporting the Walton family who won’t pay their workers a living wage,” wrote Nicole Rottet. “They are a greedy corporation, and that’s why I choose not to shop there. Not all of the corporations are greedy.”
Viktor Vaseli said employees who lost their jobs can apply to work at other stores.
“If you want a wage that you can live comfortably with try getting a more advanced job somewhere else. Jobs like this are not lifetime jobs they are starter jobs for people who don’t have any experience anywhere else,” he wrote.
Walmart will close 63 stores nationwide; Farmington Hills and Lansing are the only Michigan locations affected. News of the action quickly spread via social media, and the official Sam’s Club Twitter account posted these responses, among others:
After a thorough review of our existing portfolio, we’ve decided to close a series of clubs and better align our locations with our strategy. Closing clubs is never easy and we’re committed to working with impacted members and associates through this transition.

Pharmacies will stay open for at least two weeks, and we will work with each state’s Board of Pharmacy to help guide this transition. You will also be contacted about your prescriptions and transitioning them to another club.
