The cause of a Saturday evening fire at Zack’s Family Restaurant in Farmington Hills remains under investigation, but authorities know where it started.
Farmington Hills Fire Chief Jon Unruh said the “area of origin” lies with a neon sign on the front of the building at 27810 Grand River. The restaurant, formerly Mayberry’s Family Restaurant, was unoccupied except for the owner, a cook and a waitress when the fire broke out around 6 p.m. No one was injured.
“They noticed smoke coming from a light fixture,” Unruh said. “The owner got up on the roof. He noticed flames and called 9-1-1.”
Firefighters were on the scene for more than an hour. Because the fire was discovered early, they were able to “get a quick handle” on it, Unruh said.
About 15 percent of the roof suffered fire damage, and there was smoke and water damage to the building, he added.
